The security office was cool and filled with blinking blue monitors on the main desk.
David, Sarah, and the lead detective stood behind the security guard reviewing the footage.
The guard clicked back twenty minutes on the digital clock to scan the staircase line.
On the screen, a figure wearing a dark coat walked slowly toward the marble steps.
The person pulled a small spool of wire out of their deep side coat pocket carefully.
They tied one end around the heavy wooden railing base near the bottom step.
David leaned closer to the monitor with his teeth clenched tight in rising anger.
The figure on the screen turned slightly toward the angle of the overhead camera lens.
It was not Eleanor standing near the staircase with the thin metallic fishing wire.
It was David's younger brother Richard, who owed millions in bad gambling debts.
"Richard..." David breathed out, feeling a deep wave of shock hit his heart instantly.
Richard had been smiling and hugging Claire only an hour before the terrible incident.
The detective immediately pulled out his radio to alert the officers waiting downstairs.
"Subject is in the main living room, move in quietly," the detective instructed cold.
David wiped his face with both hands, unable to believe his own brother's betrayal.
Richard needed his share of the trust fund money immediately to pay his lenders back.
Without a new baby heir, Richard's share would have doubled in value overnight instantly.
"He was going to hurt my family for cash," David said with bitter tears welling up.
Sarah touched David's shoulder gently as they prepare to head back into the lobby.
"We have to face him together right now," Sarah said with total strength in her voice.
