The sun shone through the tall glass windows of the grand penthouse overlooking Dallas.
Claire walked slowly across the white polished floor while holding her baby bump gently.
She wore a pink satin dress that matched the soft roses on the tables.
Her husband David had thrown this party to celebrate their upcoming child and family fortune.
Guests stood near the golden chandelier holding glasses of expensive champagne.
Claire felt tired from greeting so many wealthy relatives and wanted to sit down upstairs.
She started walking up the wide marble staircase near the entrance.
Her sister Sarah suddenly burst through the front door looking completely panicked.
Sarah wore a bright red dress and ran straight toward the grand staircase.
"Claire, stop!" Sarah screamed at the top of her lungs.
Claire turned around in confusion with her foot hovering right above the next step.
Sarah leaped forward and grabbed Claire firmly around her waist to pull her back.
Claire gasped in shock as both women nearly lost their balance on the smooth marble.
David dropped his glass on the carpet when he saw Sarah grab his pregnant wife.
He rushed over with an angry look on his face, pointing his finger at Sarah.
"Are you out of your mind?!" David yelled so loud the entire room fell dead silent.
"Look at the wire!" Sarah shouted back, pointing directly at the edge of the step.
David stopped in his tracks and leaned down to look closely at the white stone.
A thin metal wire was tied tightly from one wooden pillar to the handrail.
It was almost invisible under the bright overhead lights of the penthouse foyer.
If Claire had taken one more step, she would have tripped and fallen backward.
David turned pale as he realized how close his wife had come to severe harm.
"Who put this here?" David whispered, his hand shaking near the metallic string.
Sarah looked around the room at the startled faces of their guests and family members.
"Someone in this house did not want your baby to inherit the family trust," Sarah said.
The air in the room felt heavy as suspicion instantly filled the quiet penthouse.
