The dark room was silent for a few long emotional seconds.
Mark stepped slowly across the threshold into the dim cool shadow.
He reached his left hand along the wall to find the switch.
Bright overhead ceiling lights flickered on across the wide storage room.
Sarah was sitting on the wooden floor near an old armchair.
Her eyes were red and swollen from crying for many minutes.
Her delicate bridesmaid dress was crumpled around her small knees.
A thick leather binder lay open in her lap on the floor.
Mark dropped to his knees right beside his crying younger sister.
He put his arms around her shoulders to comfort her quickly.
Mark: Sarah, what happened to you inside this dark locked room?
Sarah: She locked me in here so I would not tell!
Mark: What secret are you talking about right now, Sarah?
Lily stood in the doorway with her face totally white.
She held the edge of her wedding veil with shaking fingers.
Her mother, Eleanor, came walking fast down the marble hallway outside.
Eleanor wore a rich purple dress and expensive gold jewelry items.
She looked into the open room with sharp angry blue eyes.
Eleanor: What is the meaning of this commotion before the wedding?
Mark: Lily locked my sister inside this back room, Eleanor!
Eleanor: That is impossible, Lily would never do such a thing!
Sarah raised her shaking hand and pointed at the opened binder.
Old legal papers and yellow printed receipts were inside the folder.
Mark picked up the top paper and read the black text.
The document was an old trust fund agreement from ten years ago.
It showed their late father's signatures written across the bottom line.
Their father had left their childhood family house to Sarah alone.
Mark felt a shock of deep confusion hit his whole body.
He had always believed that Lily's family owned this estate.
When they started dating, Lily said her parents bought the mansion.
Now the legal papers proved his late father owned the home.
Mark looked back at Lily with absolute disbelief in his eyes.
Mark: This home belongs to my family, not your parents!
Lily: Mark, please let me explain the whole situation to you!
Mark: You lied to me about this house from day one!
Eleanor: Be quiet, Mark, you do not understand real business!
Eleanor stepped into the room with a cold stern face.
She tried to grab the leather binder from Sarah's hands.
Mark stood up quickly and blocked Eleanor from stepping closer.
He held the legal papers tight inside his right fist.
Sarah wiped her wet cheeks and stood up beside her brother.
Sarah: I found these papers inside the attic safe today, Mark.
Sarah: Lily caught me reading them and locked the door tight.
Mark: Is this why you wanted to marry me so quickly?
Lily began to cry soft tears near the open door frame.
She took one step closer to Mark with her hands raised.
Lily: I love you, Mark, that part is completely true!
Mark: But your family wanted control over my father's property estate!
Eleanor pulled Lily back by her white silk dress sleeve.
Eleanor: Do not beg him, Lily, we have rights here!
Mark realized his entire wedding was built on a terrible scam.
